Working through injury
Date: 31/3/2009
This month has been a tough one but gradually got better and better as the days have gone buy. I was forced to pull out of the European indoor Championships that were held in Turin, I was very disappointed that I was forced to make this decision but felt it was the right one. I had been battling through training in terrible pain and knew I could not produce my best jumps if I was in pain walking to the runway let alone running on it. After I few days of discussions with my coach and medical team I decided that if I am ever going to jump to my potential I must get pain free and then stay pain free (I hope).

I decided to go to Ireland for a few days straight after the European championships as I wanted a mental break from the sport, but don't worry I was still busy physically rehabbing in the hotel gym! It was great to go to Dublin, the last time I went was when I was 15 to represent England u17`s in an international, it was a great experience and I made some great friends from it that I still keep in touch with today. Dublin was a great place to relax and recharge my body, I took a tour bus around the city and also drove down the coast, getting away for a couple of days allows me to put my athletics life into perspective and I realised just how much I want to jump really, really far this year!!

To speed up the recovery of my Achilles tendon I have been taking 5 cod liver oil tablets each morning, along with 400mg of ibuprofen after breakfast, lunch and dinner, to reduce the swelling. You have to be very careful though when taking these supplements as I am 6`6 and weigh nearly 14 stone and can therefore take higher doses of medication than a smaller person. Nutrition is crucial to fixing the body, when you train to the maximum its important to recover A.S.A.P so you can get back down the track and do another session so I eat at least 7 portions of fruit and veg a day along with lots of carbohydrates before training and protein after to refuel my muscles.

I am leaving for San Diego, California to train with the British athletics team at the start of next month which should be both fun and productive so I better go and start packing!
