Competition season gets underway
Date: 1/4/2010
So much has happened since I last wrote my blog as I have competed in several competitions. I will start with my first competition of the year, the Tyson America Cup. Before the competition I had two days of practising to get used to the equipment. I was quite nervous about this competition as it was my first event since last November. I had a fall off the Pommel Horse and made a few other mistakes and I finished 5th overall. Although I was slightly disappointed it had given me plenty of positives to take home.

In the London Open I scored a lifetime best of 90.5 and won Gold. This event took place at Goresbrook Leisure Centre and was held over three days with over 200 gymnasts competing. There were over 50 athletes competing in the senior competition from GB, France, and Holland. I have been trying to break the 90 marks barrier for some time so a score of 90.5 was a really big achievement for me.

A few weeks later the Huntingdon Team, were competing in the British Team competition in Leicester. We have won the title for the last three years and so were favourites to take the title this year. It was important we all had a good performance at this competition as it would be the final qualifier for selection into the European Team.

In a training session just a few days before the competition I misjudged my somersault ending on the Parallel Bars and dislocated two of my fingers. It was extremely painful and although I carried on training the team were unsure whether I would be able to compete. However the next day I still managed to train doing some easier routines with my fingers strapped together. When it came to the competition we finished in second place with South Essex taking the title. Obviously we were disappointed not to win but things didn't go as well as we'd hoped on a few of the apparatus.

The good news is British Gymnastics announced the team for the European Championships and I was selected. Louis Smith from Huntingdon who has also blogged on this website was also selected so make sure you watch and see how we both do. We are aiming to get a team medal and I would love to get an individual medal on the pommel horse and parallel bars but we will have to wait and see.

I am currently at a training camp in Lilleshall and then head to Switzerland for a competition against teams from Belarus and Switzerland. Then it will be intensive training for the European Championships which take place in Birmingham from 20th to 26th April.

On a personal level I have am moving into a new house. It's not far from where I lived with my parents but have been busy buying things for the house and getting organised.

Exciting times are ahead!
We will have a new athlete next month....who will it be?
