Preparing for the Commonwealth Games
Date: 23/9/2010
Hi my name is Peter Waterfield and I am a diver. Some of you may remember me from the 2004 Athens Olympic Games when I won a Silver Medal in the Synchronised 10 metre Platform with diving partner, Leon Taylor. I have also won individual medals at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and World Cup. In fact I've won a medal at every major championship and am recognised as Britain's most successful diver of all time.

In October I will be competing at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and my diving training has been very much focused towards training for that. I spend 50% of my time in the pool and 50% on land doing weights, trampolining and body conditioning.

Trampolining helps me improve technically so we do lots of somersaults and jumps to perfect our moves before taking them to the water. We also jump off a box onto a crash mat which helps us practice our take off. Building up our muscle strength using the weights helps us to jump higher off the board and also prepare our bodies for the impact of hitting the water. You have to remember we hit the water at 40mph so it's important our bodies are strong enough to cope with that pressure or we would easily get injured.

As part of my training I have recently learnt a new dive. This is a Forward 4.5 Somersaults in the Tuck position. I do a run up to the end of the board and have to somersault 4.5 times before hitting the water. If you think that it takes less than 2 seconds from take off to entering the water there is a lot to fit in. This dive has a tariff of 3.7 and all being well I will use it at the Commonwealth Games but it all depends on how it's going nearer the time. So far though it's being going very well and I am improving all the time!

I train 5 to 6 days a week for 5 or 6 hours a day. Around that training I am also a mentor for the Youth Sport Trust and help young people achieve their goals so this involves going into schools and talking to pupils. It's something I really enjoy doing and it's great to pass some of my knowledge and experience on to others.

Another big part of my life is my family. I recently celebrated my third wedding anniversary and we
Pete Go Karting
have two boys aged 2 and 9 years so looking after them takes up a lot of my time. I recently took my oldest son Go Karting for the first time which was great fun and you can see how we got on in my pictures.

A few weeks ago I did some filming for The One Show. They have a wildlife feature called How Do Animals Do That? One of the producers was trying to re-create a bird that dives down into the sea to catch their prey. He came along to the pool and I taught him how to dive, starting on the lower boards and working up to the 10metres. That video is scheduled to be shown at some point in October. It was great fun to do.

Pete at the Boat Show
One of my friends has recently won the UK rights to sell 3H Watches. These are a specialist ocean diving watch and I have been helping him promote them. I went with him to do some publicity at The Boat Show in Southampton. I took my medals and spoke to the general public and wore one of the watches. We had a great day!

In a few days I will be travelling to Leeds to do a training camp. I will be there for a few weeks and then head straight to India on 5th October. At the Commonwealth Games I will be competing in the 10 metre Platform Individual Event and all being well the synchronised event too. This will be confirmed in a few weeks as it will depend how things go in the training camp. I really hope to win a medal at the games and will definitely be going for gold. I won Gold in 2002 and Silver in 2006 so let's see what 2010 brings.

Make sure you come back soon to see how I got on in Delhi.
