The start of an exciting year...
Date: 31/1/2012
Well whilst many of you were enjoying the festive break and relaxing I had a really busy time. There was no Christmas and New Year break for me as I had to throw myself into my training - I even went for a long run on Christmas Day. The next few months are so important as I fight for my place in Team GB. In just a few weeks the shortlist will be reduced from 8 players to just 4 and I need to make that shortlist to stand any chance - there are only three men's places up for grabs.

One very exciting event over Christmas was me becoming an Uncle for the first time. This was a lovely Christmas present for my family.

So what have I been doing so far in 2012? The answer is loads! At the start of the year I moved to Austria. This was an important move for me as I need to be in the best place to improve my game. I've settled into life out here well and am enjoying it although it can be hard being away from my family and friends.

I also went to Hungary for a pro tour which went well and I moved higher up the World Rankings and played some players that are higher so it was good experience. The pro tours are similar to tennis where the same people go but you are competing in lots of different locations so you get to see some familiar faces.

Not only do I have the Olympic qualification to work towards but I regularly compete in Spain in a Spanish Table Tennis League so I am doing a lot of travelling at the moment which is really tiring. The good news is I won both of my January matches and have moved up the league.

Something else I've recently got involved with is a campaign with Coca-Cola. It's called Move to the Beat and involved music producer Mark Ronson and Katy B. They have selected young athletes from around the world. You will hear more of this campaign over the coming months. Loving being involved though.

I'm actually writing this just before I head to Slovenia to compete in a World Pro Tour. I see every single competition as one small step closer to my goal. At 21 I am still at the very start of my career as many players continue to play until they are 50 providing they remain fit and injury free. There couldn't be a better place to kick start my career than in front of a home crowd in London this summer.

Make sure you come back and have a read next month to see how my competitions are going and to see if I made that all important first shortlist!
